Review: Megan Miller Nail Polish – Foxy
Yup! So it’s Sunday…. Time for NOTD.. or rather Nails of the Week!
Today, I decided to try on a color from an indie nail polish brand Megan Miller. In case you are not familiar with this brand, it is sort of an environmental friendly nail polish, clearly evident by it’s bottle. The bottle is custom designed and fitted with its own natural cork top. Each piece is hand tied with all natural raffia providing a unique feel and look to every piece – this, to me is such a nice touch for any product.
Don’t be fooled by the cork cover, it does not pop open like a bubbly champagne bottle, it’s secured by way of a screw. The top of the cork bears Megan Miller’s signature logo – feather of a peacock.
“Inspired by the display the peacock portrays when its feathers are in full bloom, the Megan Miller collection aims to inspire you to show your grandest side with confidence and ease. Like the peacock, we look to blend a natural elegance in order to make you look good, feel complete and ‘Be Colorful’.”
These nail polishes are said to free of the “Big 3” commonly found chemicals in nail polish compositions – Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP); Toluene; Formaldehyde.
From the Megan Miller website:
Dibutyl Phthalate or DBP is a plasticizer that makes nail polish flexible. Phthalates are known to affect hormone function and long-term exposure may cause damage to the kidneys and liver. Pregnant women must consider that DBP may harm the developing fetus and the male testes.
Toluene is a colorless liquid used as a solvent. Toluene is a human reproductive and developmental toxin. It is thought to cause liver damage and skin irritation. In high levels it may affect the kidneys. Toluene has been linked to birth defects.
Formaldehyde assists in hardening the nail. Formaldehyde has been linked to cancer and inhaling the fumes can result in watery eyes, headache, and labored breathing.
The color that was provided to me was Foxy. It’s a really pretty greyish taupe color which I love!
Maybe I have been spoilt rotten by the big nail polish brushes from OPI and OPI by Nicole. Was initially disappointed when I saw that the brush was not as “thick” as I would like, but it sure wasn’t the thinnest brush I’ve seen. So, I can’t really complain. What matters is how the nail polish applies. First impression of the polish when I lifted the brush was that it seemed pretty runny, which could mean that it is either very easy to apply or that it is not as opaque.
As expected, the polish goes on easily but first coat was not as opaque as what I have recently been used to, especially with A-England and Chanel nail polishes. However, the single coat did produce a nice glossy shine.
The second coat did cover my nails a little more. This time, the gloss from the nail polish was even more apparent, which was lovely! I don’t usually apply more than two coats of nail polish because I am more often than not… lazy! :p
I guess it’s the liquidy texture of the nail polish that made application of the third coat so easy, without leaving streaks which would normally happen with thick polishes, especially if the bottom coats are not sufficiently dry. Three coats on, and voila! It was a perfect match to the color of the bottle.
I must say, despite having to apply 3 coats to achieve the perfect shade, the entire process was pretty fuss-free. The nail polish dried pretty quickly between coats, making the layering of coats a breeze. This nail polish also did not have a strong toxic nail polish smell.
Best of all, I absolutely love the gloss and sheen it exudes. It definitely can do without a top coat. All pictures above are taken without top coat.
Megan Miller nail polish can be purchased from MeiMei Signatures at SGD18 per bottle.
