Tutorial: Rainbow Ombre Nails

Ombre Hair, Ombre Nails, Ombre everything. This seems to be the hype since the middle of 2011. So what is the meaning of Ombre?

Ombre is a French term meaning “shaded.” Usually a multicolored stripe, with colors graduating from light to dark. The color effect is woven into the fabric. Generally produced by arranging different tones in the warp.

I have seen several pictures of beautifully colored ombre hair on Instagram, but since I can’t indulge in that trend due to work, I decided to settle for something less conspicuous – Nails

You might recall my virgin sponging experience where I tried to create a gradient effect using 2 colors. After much trial and error, I finally found a way to easily achieve the design I want effortlessly. And here’s the result!

Step 1: Apply a base coat to start.

Step 2: Apply 2 coats of opague white or nude nail polish. White will bring out the vibrancy of your rainbow color nail polish. Nude will cause the colors to be more subtle. It is really your choice, I chose white because I wanted the rainbow colors to pop.

Step 3: Cut a small piece of facial sponge or kitchen sponge (yup, it will work too). Immerse it in water and squeeze out the excess. The damp sponge will not only make for a smooth transfer of color onto the nails but it will also prolong the life of the sponge filled with nail polish. What this means is that the damp sponge will not harden and dry out as quickly. This way, you can continue to use the same area of sponge throughout your project.

Step 4: Apply your desired nail polish design on the sponge.

Step 5: Lightly dap and stipple the sponge over your nails. Don’t worry about the mess it creates around the corners of your nails. We will take care of that later.

Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 unil you achieve your desired color.

TIP: Repeat step 3 if you find the portion of your sponge with nail polish hardening. The water will help soften the sponge and “bring it back to life”.

Step 7: Clean the corners of your nails with a Q-tip dipped in nail polish remover.

Step 8: Finish off with your favorite top coat.

VIOLA! Your very own Ombre Nails.

This same method can be used to create many other different designs. Your imagination’s the limit. Have fun!
